The rivalry is fueled further by the claim that the Bills are the only team in New York since the Jets play their games in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
The two teams first met on September 11, 1960. The game was played at the Polo grounds where the Bills won 27-3. They meet twice each season with the Bills leading the series 60-53. They have also won 6 of the last 11 meetings.

In December 1993 The Jets were on course for the play offs but managed to botch the game when Cary Blanchard missed a 42 yard field goal wide left which might have seen them through. Instead, the Bills won the game and went on to win their 5th AFC East title in 6 years.

There have been moments of note during their long rivalry. In 1973, O.J. Simpson rushed 200 yards during the Bills 34-14 win over the jets. He became the first player in the NFL with 2000 rushing yards to his name. In the first and only wild card game ever between the sides, the Bills stormed into a 24-0 second quarter lead courtesy of two touchdown catches from Frank Lewis. The Jets heaved themselves back into the game but with the score at 31-27 to the Bills.
Bill Simpson made an unbelievable interception at the Bill’s 1 yard line with only a couple seconds of play left to save the bills lead and win the game for them. In December 1998, the Jets beat the Bills 17-10 to lift their first ever AFC East title. In November 2012, a New York Jets vs Buffalo Bills game moved due to heavy snow. The game moved from Sunday afternoon in Buffalo to a day later in Detroit.
The Bills who had not had much training pulled of a shock 38-3 rout over the Jets in what was a match of individuals. In November 2015, the Bills won 27-17 in Ryan Rex’s homecoming at the MetLife to tie them with the Bills both 5-4, despite the Jets having made a scintillating 4-1 start. Ryan Rex had been coach for the Jets before sack. Weeks later, he replaced Doug Marrone as Bill’s coach. During his first press conference he promised the Bills would make the playoffs and become tough. He then signed Jets linebacker Enemkpali who had assaulted Geno Smith. Geno Smith was never the same again.
